The Whiny Expat Bloggers MeetUp was borne of a spirit of good-natured bellyaching a few years ago.
Our discussion board for planning our get-togethers is members-only to voice your opinion and cast a vote for where and when, so register yourself there if you
- are located in Germany, but from somewhere else, and
- have a blog with English-language content
- want to watch or shape the details on this year’s meetup
We’ve visited the following cities during our annual meetup weekends. Read some reactions to previous WEBMUs:
- 2005: Marburg
- 2006: Bonn
- 2007: Dresden
- 2008: Bremen
- 2009: Munich
- 2010: Hamburg
- 2011: Cologne
- Frau Dietz Does Cologne. In the WEBMU style.
- This International Life: A spin around Cologne, with bloggers
- 2012: Berlin
- 2013: ??? — come help us decide!
Each year, we have a discussion including nominations and volunteers to host. Then we vote and get the ball rolling. Starting in 2009, we moved the discussion onto a BBS (bulletin board system). Surf over and see what kind of cool stuff our volunteer hosts organized for us to do/see/eat while we shot the breeze in person for a change.

Not a blogger, not yet, anyway. Just interested in meeting fellow expats. May I attend your meet?
Alas, Ralph, we missed your message until after the meetup — sorry!
Please get your blog set up (and there are plenty of cheap or free services out there with which you can get started) with a few posts and then register yourself on our discussion board to get in at ground level for next year’s meetup.
Wow, I just saw this. I have to say Cliff that I disagree with your response.
When I first moved here, there were a few “key” blogs that helped ease my transition – which led me to the bloggers meet-up.
I asked J, who at that time was organizing our meetups, if I must must must have a blog. He said no, because it was more about expats than blogs.
I agree with his explanation and would like to see this continue to be the “requirements” of our “group”.
Hi Alice,
Hmm, interesting question you pose there. I dug up some moldy old forum posts from back in the day to see what we decided back then about membership on the discussion board and meetup attendance. Here’s what I found:
http://forums.expatbloggersingermany.com/discussion/14/user-administration-and-security-concept
Seems like we all agreed that non-bloggers are certainly welcome to attend the WEBMU events as a guest of one of the blogging and voting members.
At the moment, I know that the reservations and final headcount are critical to the WEBMU organizers. If you’d like to bring someone along, by all means, please do, but let Snooker know via the board how many of your party to expect. I am completely open to discussing those rules again once I get through a rather hectic couple weeks at work and this year’s WEBMU in Berlin has come and gone.
Update on this topic: due to widespread support for opening up our discussion forums, as of a few days ago anyone can join up as a member at the Expat Bloggers In Germany!

Is the meet-up for this year planned yet? Just checking in. Sounds like a fantastic time and I’d love to meet other bloggers living in Germany.
Hello Heather — it’s about half-planned at the moment. We’ve got a location nailed down for this year (it’s Berlin!), but still have to choose a weekend. Our discussion forum has the details!
